Wisdom Teeth Removal
Your wisdom teeth or third molars are often the very last to come into the mouth. The problem is, patients may not have enough room for wisdom teeth, causing them to become impacted. If there is an insufficient amount of room for wisdom teeth to grow in, a range of issues can develop over time when they are left in place. Definitive Dental recommends a wisdom tooth extraction to prevent damaging your oral and dental health.
What Wisdom Tooth Extraction Involves
If you leave impacted wisdom teeth alone, the pain and discomfort that you may experience can be long-term. Commonly, getting food trapped between a partially erupted wisdom tooth and the gums will cause pain and swelling. You may find that this pain comes and goes with time, but that it always returns. In extreme cases, when impacted wisdom teeth grow in they can become infected, decayed, and even cause damage to surrounding teeth. The surrounding molars may crack and break as the wisdom tooth pushes against them. If a wisdom tooth is severely impacted, we may bring in a specialist or refer you to our Oral Surgeon.
To determine if you need a wisdom tooth extraction, we’ll have you come in for a consultation and exam. X-rays are necessary so that we can see where your wisdom teeth are growing in and their current position. We often recommend wisdom teeth removal sooner than later before the teeth fully develop, making them more difficult to remove safely. We offer this procedure in a calm, comfortable, and highly relaxed environment.
The procedure begins with numbing to ensure you are comfortable during the surgery. Conscious sedation and nitrous, or laughing gas, are also available. We then carefully extract the impacted wisdom teeth. Stitches may or may not be placed to help close and heal the gums properly. We send you home with important aftercare instructions so that the surgical site heals well over the next few days.
