Dental Exams & Cleanings
Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?
Exams by dentists are routine check-ups to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. Cleanings by dental hygienists remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can miss.
Exams and cleanings are both important to checkups, and should be scheduled once every six months.

Why are These Procedures Necessary?
When you forgo routine dental care, smaller issues can and will eventually get worse. By the time teeth break or start to hurt, the necessary treatment is usually more involved and expensive. Without regular dental cleanings, you’re also likely to have a build-up of plaque, which eventually becomes tartar on your teeth. This is a hard, chalky substance that is difficult to remove without the specialized tools of a dentist. Professionally done cleanings can remove these deposits to facilitate a brighter smile and healthier teeth. If left untreated long enough, bad breath, gum disease, bone loss, and loose teeth are not uncommon.

How Often Should You Have Dental Exams and Cleanings Done?
We strongly recommend that you visit a dental clinic once every six months to undergo exams and cleanings. Even if it’s been a while since your last appointment, it’s never too late to take control of your dental health. If you’re a parent, we recommend bringing your child in as soon as their first teeth begin to erupt through the gums or by their first birthday. Preventive care can help keep your teeth looking their absolute best.
What Can You Expect to Happen During Dental Exams and Cleanings?
Teeth cleaning is a smooth and easy process. The hygienist may take x-rays and inspect your gums for signs of inflammation and pocketing. If we identify signs of gum disease, we will recommend additional treatment to get you healthy, such as a deep cleaning. The hygienist will use hand or water scalers to remove any tartar and stains. Your teeth are then polished and flossed. Finally, the dentist will conduct an oral cancer screening, thoroughly inspecting your mouth and x-rays for any signs of decay or areas that may need attention.
