What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells placed directly over natural teeth to conceal tooth imperfections (such as cracks or chips) or discoloration. In addition, porcelain veneers can provide a uniform color to make your smile look healthier and younger while minimally altering the underlying tooth structure.

Who gets porcelain veneers?

People with severe discoloration (that don’t respond to teeth whitening), cosmetic issues, and good oral health are potential candidates for porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers can also be used to close gaps between teeth or correct the shape of teeth, most commonly the upper front teeth. If you are considering cosmetic dentistry, schedule your consultation with our expert team to determine the best option for your oral health and your smile goals.

What is the process for veneers?

The veneer process is similar to that of crowns and will require a couple of visits for the best results. During the initial consultation and examination, we will examine your oral health and discuss your options and goals. If you and your dentist think porcelain veneers are the best option, we may take impressions to create a workup to give you an idea of the look of your veneers. We will make any preparations necessary on the teeth and create temporary veneers. Once the porcelain veneers are ready, we will check the color and shape one more time before bonding the veneers in place.

What should you expect with veneers?

While veneers are very durable, it is important for you to properly care for your teeth. We will give you specific instructions based on your customized plan. Best practices are to cut hard fruits and vegetables instead of biting into them, as they may increase the chances of veneers coming off and needing to be rebonded. In addition, we recommend when you floss to slide the floss out from the front instead of pulling it back out the way it went in. While these precautions are not necessary, they may increase the longevity of your veneers.
